The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday confirmed that it was working to “deally reduce the price of a product in the form of a price reduction” that could put patients on prescription medications and increase access to those medications.
The move comes amid the latest round of a nationwide review of the medicines and their safety.
A second study, conducted in October by the drugmaker, found the price of a 20-milligram dose of Nexium was “very expensive” and that patients were losing about 40 percent of their medical costs.
A fourth study, conducted in March, found that the price of a 20-milligram dose of a drug that was prescribed for an adult, for the treatment of heart disease was $6,976.
The price of a 20-milligram dose of Prilosec, a drug used to treat high blood pressure, was $6,868.
The price of a 20-milligram dose of a drug that is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, a heartburn that occurs when stomach acid goes back up too much, is $12,964.
The price of a 20-milligram dose of Pepcid, an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis, was $6,918.
U. District Judge Linda the woman who brought the case after the company announced the launch of its drug -- told a news conference that the Food and Drug Administration, which oversees the health-care agency, had taken the “maximum possible chance” to protect patients from drug shortages.
The FDA has not taken action on the price of the drug, which it says is the result of the review.
Patients are being told that their medications are no longer being prescribed for them and that the price they paid for them will be the same as those they paid for the original prescription drug. That’s because the price of an original prescription drug is set by a manufacturer, not an insurer, the company said.
That means that some patients are not receiving the full benefits they were receiving for their medications, and the company has said it will continue to work with the FDA to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the drug.
But in an interview with The Associated Press, Dr. Matthew Arnold, a professor of medicine and the lead author of the study, said the price of Nexium could be higher than that, as long as the price is kept under control.
“I think the best thing to do for people that have health insurance is to ask, ‘Can you lower the price of these products in the form of a price reduction?'”
“I don’t know how you do that. You have to know that you’re making the right decision,” said Dr. Arnold, who has studied the effects of prescription drugs.
In his first clinical trial, which was conducted in April and June 2013, he compared the effectiveness of the Nexium treatment with that of a dummy pill and found the results were both within the margin of safety.
A second trial, in which he treated patients for a second time with a placebo, found that Nexium patients were more likely to stop taking the drug than patients who were not taking the drug.
The drugmaker said it is working to find an alternative drug, which it said will not affect its ability to treat heartburn.
The company also said it plans to launch a similar study in 2017.

Introduction:The prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) among adults in South Africa is rising. NEXIUM 40MG, USP, TABLET, ORAL SUPPLY is indicated for the management of reflux symptoms in adults with moderate-to-severe erosive esophagitis. The recommended starting dose is 40 mg. The efficacy and safety have been assessed in more than 65% of patients, with the majority of patients achieving complete healing within three months. Long-term efficacy in managing GERD symptoms is limited by the need to maintain the dosage, as there is a potential for serious adverse events. Patients should be advised to promptly report any adverse reactions to their healthcare team, especially if they have taken a prescription for the drug.
Maintenance of response:Patients with persistent or recurrent reflux symptoms who have used a treatment for more than 3 years should be monitored for worsening of symptoms and persistent symptoms. If symptoms worsen, further therapy should be discontinued and appropriate measures instituted. Patients should be advised to seek medical advice and to promptly report any worsening symptoms to their healthcare team. Patients should be aware of the potential adverse effects of NEXIUM 40MG and the potential for serious events, including ulcers, bleeding, and perforation. If an adverse reaction to this drug is suspected, appropriate medical attention should be sought.
Method:We conducted a prospective, randomized study of patients with moderate-to-severe reflux symptoms with persistent or recurrent erosive esophagitis. Patients who were treated with 40 mg of NEXIUM 40mg/day were randomly assigned in two groups: Group 1 (n=40) received a single dose of 40 mg of NEXIUM 40mg/day or placebo and Group 2 (n=40) received a single dose of 20 mg of NEXIUM 40mg/day. The study was designed to assess safety and tolerability of the two groups. Patients were observed for any adverse reactions. All patients were evaluated for effectiveness and tolerability by the investigator or pharmacist. The investigator recorded all adverse events on the patient's clinical information sheet. Patients were advised to contact their healthcare team immediately if symptoms persisted or worsened. All patients were given NEXIUM 40MG and provided the opportunity to discuss any concerns and discuss potential treatment options. Patients were instructed to take the drug immediately upon arrival. The study was stopped prematurely and the study was terminated prematurely.
Study design:This prospective randomized, double-blind, multi-center, randomized, placebo-controlled study was conducted between April 2021 and January 2023 at a total of 17 sites in South Africa. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the University of the Witwatersrand, Pretoria, South Africa. All patients provided written informed consent. The study protocol was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. Patients were randomized by a stratified random effect using randomization software (Sig. random number generator). The patients were followed up for 3 months and any symptoms and/or adverse events, and any adverse effects were reported in detail in the patient information sheet.
Results:NEXIUM 40MG was well tolerated in the three groups. The mean patient age was 41 years and 57% of patients had moderate-to-severe erosive esophagitis. NEXIUM 40MG was well tolerated in all three groups. There were no treatment-related adverse events. The mean time to complete healing was 7.8 months in Group 1 and 8.5 months in Group 2. The mean number of erosions and regurgitation was 0.4 and 0.3 in Group 1 and 2, respectively. The mean number of gastrointestinal symptoms and the mean frequency of erosions were 3.6 and 2.7 in Group 1 and 1.1 and 2.5 in Group 2, respectively. The mean number of adverse events was 3.6 in Group 1 and 2.7 in Group 2, respectively. There were no treatment-related events in the placebo group. There were no side effects in the three groups. All patients reported improved symptoms and/or resolution of symptoms. There were no treatment-related adverse events reported in any patients.
